As a clarinetist frequently performing with string quartets, the clarinet quintet is a strange omission from Jörg Widmann’s catalogue of works. Up until now, his quintet programmes have included works primarily by Mozart, Brahms, Weber, and – in slightly altered or extended instrumentation – Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps, alongside Widmann’s own sextet Fieberfantasie.
