Pēteris Vasks composed this cycle for women's choir on poems by his Latvian compatriot Vitauts Ļūdēns. The lyrics are taken from the poetry collections Blizzard in the Rye of 1971 and The Birch Bark Plaits from 1973. In atmospherically dense nature images seemingly contradictory feelings are expressed, which are reflected in the varied forms of choral singing - from chorale-like sections on aleatorische techniques to whispered sound effects.
