Edward MacDowell (1860–1908), although rather unknown in Germany, ranks among the most important musicians of North America on the threshold of the 20th century. He received his musical training in Paris, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden and Frankfurt. In 1888 MacDowell returned to the USA where he was celebrated as a pianist and composer, as 'the greatest musical genius America has produced'.
