"Hungarian Dance No. 5" is one of a series of numbers by Brahms based on Gypsy airs. In this adaption taken from the most popular of these, the original orchestral key of F–sharp minor has been transposed to F minor, allowing for technical simplifications, as well as more resonance as a band key. The overall form is structured as A–B–A, the middle section being in F major, giving charm and contrast to an otherwise rough country dance style.
