This piece is quite virtuosic, but the aim is not technical display, rather emotions expressed through strong melodic lines and harmonies which are tonal but quite complex. The titles of the four movements are self-explanatory. The Lament has a clear Celtic flavour with passionate melodies. The Dance is light-footed, with elusive ternary rhythms and a subtle mixture of optimism and melancholy.
