E lucevan le stelle is an aria from Giacomo Puccini's opera "Tosca". In this poignant aria, Mario Cavaradossi is in captivity awaiting his execution. There he sings for the last time about his love for Tosca. He sings about the memories of tender touches, her scent and the smell of her skin, and how these memories gradually fade and move further and further into the unreachable distance - similar to the twinkling stars in the night sky.
