The latvian poet Knuts Skujenieks spent seven years in Russian captivity in the Gulag. He valued his artistic freedom so much that he refused to write in accordance with the regime, even when he was offered a shorter prison sentence in return. Vasks setting of his poem is warm, emotional music.
