The title of this composition is to be understood ambiguously: On the one hand, the word „sketches“ alludes to the „sketchy“ shortness of the five quintetsätze. On the other hand, "sketch" also means a short, usually humorous performance between two or more participants - in this case five! The composer thus offers a series of concise and pointed musical scenes, each of which focuses on one of the quintet instruments.
